Autofocus vs Manual Focus Accuracy (Mosaic)

This example is taken from the mosaic comparison.

I shot one series using autofocus, shooting an aperture series from f/2.8 through f/22. I then manually focused by eye, and shot the same aperture series. the focus was at center of course, since that’s the only place the S2 can focus.

Autosoft

This scene should be a “no brainer” for autofocus: a high contrast sunlit area. It was not difficult for me to focus by eye, so why is it that autofocus cannot get the job done, and get it done more accurately?

In most field-shooting cases, the S2 did achieve excellent focus. But that great Leica MTF only gets delivered if the focus is exact, and in my experience, no autofocus system can do that every time (even Nikon and Canon). So manual focus and/or focus bracketing is still advisable with subjects that require pinpoint focus.
