Shootout vs 28-45/4.5: Bench (645Z)
How good is the 28-45 zoom compared to its 35/3.5 prime?
This comparison is at relatively close range, but other comparison show similar results at greater distance. The change in perspective is due strictly to the lens change—the camera did not move—the 28-45mm is a large lens and its entrance pupil is significantly different than the 35/3.5, which changes the perspective.
Bench
Additional sharpening was used to counteract diffraction for the f/9, f/13 exposures as per Mitigating Micro Contrast Losses from Diffraction Blur in Making Sharp Images (minimal for f/9).
There’s not much of a contest here. The thing is, this was true in every comparison: the first one (not shown) I was skeptical of some kind of odd mistake (albeit inexplicable), but the consistent results could not be denied. This comparison shows the differences.
