Astrophotography at f/2

For astrophotography, wider is often better, and 20mm is a key focal length.

This page looks at the f/2 performance of the Nikon NIKKOR Z 20mm f/1.8 S on an 11-minute exposure. Aperture f/2 was chosen over f/1.8 to provide more uniform illumination over the frame, and slightly better sharpness.

The image quality from the Nikon Z7 in this image is so awful that I deem it unusable for astrophotography—see the crop that follows.

Commentary based on close inspection of the image on the relatively low resolution 101 ppi NEC PA302W. Users with Retina displays may be hard pressed to see the distinctions discussed here due to display pixel density (eye cannot resolve detail that fine).
