Sony A7R II

Examples: Detailed Look at Long Exposures (Hoover Wilderness)

This test assesses image quality with long exposures that vary in exposure from optimal to somewhat underexposed, unlike the greatly underexposed assessment.

Most of these images do not use LENR (Long exposure noise reduction). LENR uses dark frame subtraction, so a 30-second exposure requires a 30-second additional exposure with the shutter closed, doubling the total time. But as the Egg Shaped Boulder example shows, LENR is not necessarily a win. At any rate, these are all reasonable exposures showing little noise.

Histogram—the Sony histogram can be substantially inaccurate, as can be seen by comparing the actual raw data via RawDigger vs the in-camera histogram. This makes choosing optimal exposure in the field quite difficult. It is important to examine not only the histogram, but to watch for any blinking highlights—while that blinking is pessimistic it is fairly close to the real limits.
