Tested with the Sony RX1 in August 2012 (not the RX1R from August 2013). Testing of the Sony RX1R in August 2013 (a year later) delivered a very different experience: fast and accurate autofocus proved so good that I rarely resorted to manual focus. Sony has apparently tweaked the camera in good ways.
The Sony RX1 suffers from the same backfocus type errors as many cameras. Hence the error shown here is not some issue peculiar only to the RX1, so the issue becomes knowing the behavior and how to compensate for it.
Meaning that the focus sensor when placed squarely on a subject which has even a small amount of subject matter behind the main subject causes the camera to focus on the more distant area, even if the vast majority of the area covered by the focus sensor is closer.
