Dell U3224KB 6K Display: Overview

CLICK TO VIEW: Display Choices, 4K, 5K, 6K

Dell U3224KB 6K display

Only 8 years ago, dual Thunderbolt cables were needed for a 5K display along with those fun split display issues. Those flaky kludges are long gone. We now have 6K and even (elusive) 8K displays that run great on Thunderbolt.

There are two serious choices for a 6K display here in 2023: the Apple Pro Display XDR, and the new Dell U3224KB 6K display.

Apple display disappointed

Back when I evaluated it, the Apple Pro Display XDR had serious problems with grayscale uniformity and off-axis color shift. Whether Apple has addressed those problem I do not know. But sucker me once with a “pro” designation with distinctly poor performance, and I have little interest in playing that game. You get one chance to demolish a reputation and Apple had that chance. Plus, it’s twice the price.

I don’t care that the Apple display is far better built physically when it’s raison d^etre fails utterly—display quality was problematic and you an extra $1000 for a stand... seriously? Piling on, the Apple has inferior functionality in every regard: lower resolution. no KVM support, no USB or Thunderbolt out ports (USB 2.0 is worthless), no daisy-chaining, inferior power delivery, single input, etc, etc—a 4th place 'finish' and wildly out of date vs the Dell.

Dell U3224KB 6K display  — overview

Released in mid 2023, the Dell U3224KB 6K display is presented as a “Video Conferencing Monitor”. That put me off at first, since not only did I not want the built-in camera (a potential security hazard, and I don’t do 'Zoom', so I cover it up with a cloth). But it is there, if you want it.

Also, a video conferencing display is not aimed at professional color work and my expectations are along the lines of “in the same range as the LG5K". Dell does offer the Dell UltraSharp UP3221Q 31.5" 16:9 PremierColor 4K HDR IPS Monitor with a colorimeter and port for it for true calibration, and that display costs another $800 and is only 4K. The right tool for the job.

My interest was in its 6K resolution at 45% of the price ($2699) of the Apple Pro Display XDR ($5999 to $6899)—see below. My expectations were not high given its stated purpose (videoconferencing), but as we shall see, the Dell 6K is an incredible display.

Build quality is typical—nothing approaching the Apple Pro Display XDR, but perfectly fine for something that’s just going to sit on the desk.
