Voigtlander Lenses for Nikon Mirrorless a Huge Value, with World-Class Performance
re: Nikon Z8
The Nikon Z8 is on the way for testing. I intend to evaluate some Voigtlander Z-Mount lenses on it, in addition to various Nikon NIKKOR Z lenses.
Voigtlander has steadily expanded its lens lineup for Nikon Mirrorless. Even better, the prices are significantly lower than for Sony mirrorless.
The world-class 35/2 APO, 50/2 APO, 65/2 APO cannot be beaten. Those are the lenses I would use for high-resolution landscape photography in a compact and lightweight kit. The downside being no automated focus stepping for focus stacking. The Nikon primes are not sharpness competitive with these APO reference lenses, so that’s a tradeoff worth making.
Add the Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S and you are 'good' for most any landscape photo.
The Voigtlander Z 50mm f/1 Aspherical offers a very high speed option, though I’d opt for the Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S with AF instead, because that alleged difference of 0.2 stops is not meaningful. And AF is a major boost to hit rate, particularly with Eye AF. Also, f/1.2 may be brighter over most of the frame than f/1 due to ray angle interaction with the sensor, depending on optical designs—the f-stop difference is meaningless—it’s about T-stop.
But... none of this offers anything over Sony, barring some unexpected findings in the field.
Not shown are some additional APS-C offerings.
