Glitches and Bugs

Get the Dell UP2414Q at B&H Photo for about $949.

My initial excitement was tempered with the interruptions of a few glitches.

Whether these are the fault of the Dell UP2414Q or the OS X 10.9.3 or Apple hardware or some specific combination of settings cannot be told without further experience with other brands; it might be that these behaviors are found with any 4K display, a prospect your author deems probable.

Glitches at seemingly random times on OS X 10.9.3, mainly with the 2013 MacBook Pro Retina but some on the 2013 Mac Pro included:

  • The unit would claim it had no signal (“wake up the computer”).
  • Half the screen would go black (presumably some malfunction in the DisplayPort 1.2 Multi-Stream Transport (MST) functionality).
  • Sometimes the MacBook Pro Retina would lock up with a black screen and had to be forcibly powered off.

In some cases, power cycling the UP2414Q would restore proper operation.
