Reader Comment: Nikon Z6 Blackout

Sergey Z writes:

Very disturbing Nikon Z6 behavior: total blackout during Multiple Exposure burst

1. Turn Multiple Exposure on
2. Set number of images to any number <= 10
3. Set the mode to where it does not show you the so-far-result (or not -- does matter)
4. Set blending mode to any of {Average, Dark, Light}.
5. Set drive mode to Low, Hi, or Hi+ burst -- anything but Single-shot
6. Press the shutter and watch the screen and/or EVF (whatever you were using) blackout for the duration of burst plus a second or so after, until hourglass appears (signifying image combination taking place.)

I primarily bought the camera for multiple exposure burst photography (for impressionistic results), as well as for vintage lens weird bokeh stuff. I am in shock from the above-described behavior. Note that when M.E. is OFF, the camera behaves exactly as expected -- blackout in every drive mode except for Hi+, where it does the poor-mans zero-blackout emulation by showing the last image taken. Man, if only Sony had Multiple Exposure with creative blending modes.

DIGLLOYD: I’d be surprised if the Nikon Z7 did not have the same blackout issue. I’ll test that soon to verify.

All cameras have a CPU which has limited speed. I suspect that Nikon made a design decision on the CPU which precluded blackout-free operation with some operations.
