Flower Super-Bloom in Many Places in Southern California, such as Carrizo Plain National Monument
I saw the super-bloom in progress two weeks ago at the south end of Joshua Tree National Park; I presume it is now well off its peak.
If you like flowers, head over to Carrizo Plain within the next few days to see peak flowers. While there are plenty of unopened flower buds on plants at 3000 feet and higher (the upper end), the bloom is at its peak in most places—a week from now is likely to be less good, particularly if it gets hotter. It is the best I’ve seen it in about 12 years.
Beyond flowers, there is the constant sound of birds singing for joy, the buzz of insects, and the simple tactile pleasure of soft springtime air on the skin—wonderful.
The roads are in generally good condition, but an SUV is best, particularly in areas like Hurricane Road where this picture was taken—ruts and such are generally not bad, but can take out some plastic underbody parts, as one passenger car made plain.
