Leica SL

Leica SL: Color Moiré Example

Color moiré is an issue with any Bayer matrix camera lacking an anti-aliasing filter (though the Pentax K1 SuperRes pixel shift mode avoids the issue entirely).

Your author’s extensive experience with 36/42/50 megapixel cameras versus 24MP Leica cameras shows that 24-megapixel full-frame sensors are far more prone to color moiré, as well as other digital artifacts. That makes two powerful argument against any (circa mid-2016) Leica M or SL or S camera in favor of Nikon or Sony or Canon cameras of 36/42/50 megapixels. That’s because the oversampling of a higher-resolving sensor reduces digital artifacts like color moiré. That said, many subjects do not have repeating patterns and thus avoid any obvious color moiré issues.
