When testing a camera I always need a base plate or L-plate for tripod mounting. The Really Right Stuff products are my brand of choice.
For the Leica X Vario, I found the Really Right Stuff B9 plate to be ideal: mounted on the optional handgrip it does not block the screw-dial attaching the handgrip to the camera, which means that without tools one can remove the handgrip and gain access to the battery and card compartment.
See also camera plates for similar stuff.
The B9 plate is also useful on a wide variety of other cameras, so it’s handy to have one on hand if you’re like me: a variety of camera bodies that all need plates. The B9 plate has a flange the eliminates twist and it has none of the cork backing that can squirm and cause uneven mounting. It is a very solid little item.
I strongly recommend the optional Leica handgrip for the X Vario because a grip is badly needed. Also mounting any camera plate blocks the card door (tripod socket right next to the hinge), and thus requires an allen wrench to remove the plate to change batteries.
