Sony A7R V: Mitigating Noise, Optimizing Exposure at Base ISO
The Sony A7R V has a base ISO of 100. But even at base ISO, auto-exposure metering frequently throws away a stop of headroom, greatly increasing the noise level of the captures, and even in moderately bright areas of the image. This shows up mostly as chroma noise—discolored speckles that pollute the color rendition.
An ETTR exposure is best, but we all make exposure mistakes. This page walks through one such mistake of mine, showing the camera histogram, the actual raw file histogram, and what can be achieved using Adobe Camera Raw Enhance Details + AI Denoise to improve image quality. While it’s only off by a stop or so, the effects on image noise can be readily seen.
